Communication Supports in Exercising Capacity & Autonomy – Members Only

Presented on February 10, 2021

Barbara Collier, Dr. Jo Watson, and Glenda Watson Hyatt presented this webinar. Many individuals who use AAC report that people often underestimate their capacity to make and/or communicate choices and decisions that matter to them. In this context, the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), a human rights treaty, is intended to protect the rights and dignity of people who have disabilities. It has been ratified by 182 countries, which means that these countries are now obligated to implement it. There are many articles in the Convention that are significant for people who use AAC. Article 12 is especially significant for people who use AAC because it states that people with disabilities have a right to make choices and decisions that matter to them, and to have the supports they may need to do this.
