Ireland

We have developed a network of more than 200 people in Ireland and we aim to run lots of small events on October 10th. We have created and widely shared AAC awareness resource packs available here www.aacawareness.ie.

We aim to share posts on our events and have created a social media campaign ‘My AAC, my way’ inviting people to share posts of themselves using AAC to express their culture or language.

Happy AAC Awareness Month! I’m a parent of a teen AAC user, Himani Hitendra and also the Program Coordinator of ‘Storytime with AAC’. I want to share what my team and I are doing this October to create AAC Awareness.

In honor of AAC Awareness Month:

1. We are having ‘Storytime with AAC’ every Saturday at Union City library in October. In each session we will be reading a book in which the character uses AAC. Our participants also get a free copy of this book to take home. (The books we will be reading are Something to Say About My Communication Device by Eden Molineux, I’ve always had a Voice by Tania Wieclaw, Bitsy Bat, Team Star by Kaz Windness, and More than Words by Roz Maclean)

2. We are having an AAC Resource Fair on October 11th. This is an open event for the community. A great opportunity to try out AAC devices and apps.

3. We have Storytime with AAC (ages 7 and under) at Fremont library on October 12th. I will be reading the book ‘Inside Words, Outside Words’. We will also be doing free book giveaways!

4. We have an Online Guest Author Storytime with Roz MacLean on October 25th. She will be reading her book ‘More Than Words’. Local participants who register for this event, can pick up a free copy of her book (while supplies last).

Hello and Happy Augmentative Alternative Communication awareness month to everyone – a message from Mike Hipple, Wisconsin AAC Network, USA

I hope you will be celebrating it at your school. If you are looking for ideas, well today is your lucky day because I have ideas.

• Read a good book with a character or characters who are using AAC. Today we have so many great books for you to pick from.
• Watch the movie Out Of My Mind and have a classroom discussion about the movie and the book.
• Offer the school to hire someone who use AAC to speak to your co-workers and families. I am available to do this!
• Challenge to your school staff members to not speak for the whole day, they need to find something else to communicate. If you can get devices for them, but if you can’t afford to have this, low tech is fine.
• Last idea that I have is to celebrate students who use AAC. You can do this by posting on their locker with a paper saying OMG you are a rock star, keep on communicating!!
